It's the same dumb predictions every time there's a semi-global crisis, depression or any major significant event. People have been predicting the end of humanity/earth/universe since the ancient babylon (and probably earlier, but didn't bother writing it down). We aren't going to just dissapear. What most people tend to mean when they speak about the end of humanity is their perceived decline of "civilisation", but that's never hurt anyone other than people unwilling to change their established preconceptions of what the world and humanity should look like.
TL;DR: The morons preaching doom in any form are nothing but the non-religious equivalent of the morons condemning you to eternal hell for not hating the two guys that got married as much as they do. |

I'm not preaching doom. I'm just saying that we should get trim some fat.
Some of the proverbial fat ****s are beyond help. Better to let them die of cardiac arrest and make the rest of the world a better place.
Still, the kind of problems you do mention are nowhere near the "end of humanity" or even "end of human civilisation as we know it" level. I hate it when people take minor societal problems and extrapolate unrealistically pessimistic predictions off them. |

Originally by: Something Random I guess there is one in there thats true and has a time scale, the earth will die as the sun expands to a red giant. I seem to remember Mars is the start of the planets outside of the predicted expansion.
The Earth is a ball of rock and water. It is an inanimate object and whether it's still habitable to humanity as we know it today will be entirely irrelevant to our survival as a species four billion years from now.
In the absurd event that we haven't expanded across the galaxy by then and still somewhat resemble the homo sapiens, The resources in the outer gas giants can still easily sustain a population of trillions of humans.
Quote: eventually the entire universe will die and all matter will break down.
And that's the moment we should be aiming to survive until.

Originally by: Zzander Solus We have a six thousand year history of civilizations collapsing. To think that our civilization won't collapse at some point is rather arrogant and foolish. When it could happen, nobody really knows. There are too many variables at play for an accurate analysis. Resource depletion is common to many of the collapse scenarios. The Peak Oil Crisis is one that has certainly caught my attention, as well as the attention of world leaders and energy analysts all over the globe. Peak Oil is not about the amount of oil, but rather it is about the production vs cost threshold. It is one area that can impact every other industry on the planet. When we cross that threshold our economic recession could last for decades or centuries.
Currently dominant civilisation collapsing doesn't mean the end of the human species. Hell, every civilisation on Earth collapsing doesn't mean the end of human species. We'd be back in stone age - maybe with a population down to a couple million if there was a nuclear war - for a few centuries, maybe even millennia, but eventually old technology would be re-discovered or re-invented, and we'd be back on track. |

Originally by: Obsidian Hawk It comes down to this
There are too many people in the world, and not enough resources to go around.
second, there are also hatreds out there that have been going on since biblical times that have not gone away and are ready to explode again.
The Earth, properly engineered, could sustain a population an order of magnitude larger than we have today. That means the population can increase as much as it did between 1000 AD and today, and, assuming our technology develops at the same pace, we'll be just fine for the next 500 years even if you assume we'll still be bound to Earth's resources alone by then.
But then again, the Earth by itself represents only a little above one millionth of the resources of our solar system. And I think it's pretty absurd to assume we'll still be limited to Earth alone for much longer (in terms of population trends).
So no, we won't die out of overpopulation. That's an oxymoron. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

Originally by: Vogue There are gigantic amounts of un used farm land in eastern europe and Russia that could be used for farming. And lots of land in general in Africa too. However farm subsidies in the west prevent poor countries becoming the food basket of the world.
When you see western politicians talk about helping the 3rd world its all BS. What would help Africa and other poor countries the most is global abolition of farm subsidies.
No, totalitarian tinpot dictators are preventing poor countries from becoming food baskets. Case in point: Rhodesia/zimbabwe. The only "help" the third world needs is a healthy dose of democracy and freedom, by force if necessary. They'll be able to pick themselves up without leeching off us once they are free.
And in any case, this has ZERO RELEVANCE to the topic at hand. This entire thread illustrates perfectly why there are so many doom prophecies: Because people take random problems that couldn't possibly spell the end of humanity, and claim they will. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |
